The Powerhouse Arena

Opened in DUMBO in 2006 by the publisher Powerhouse Books, The Powerhouse Arena has served Brooklyn as both a bookstore and an exhibition space, hosting book launch parties, readings, signings, and discussions with authors, artists, public figures, chefs, and more. The long list of writers who have had readings at The Powerhouse Arena includes Salman Rushdie, Paul Aster, David Sedaris, Nassim Taleb, Mary Gaistkill, Jonathan Lethem, and Joyce Carol Oates. Other guests include Spike Lee, Jessica Lange, Moby, Al Gore, Anthony Bourdain, and Carrie Brownstein.
In addition to their literary events, The Powerhouse Arena also serves as a site for art galleries and installations. Their store sells an eclectic mix of carefully curated books in design, photography, and more. They’re particularly known for their extensive children’s corner, which contains a number of hard to find books and game kits.

The Powerhouse Arena’s venue and events have received praise in publications such as TimeOut New York and Publishers Weekly. They’re now running a variety of online events, including virtual book launches and virtual story times.
